Today, India is home to the third largest Muslim population in the world. It is also one of the few countries that have adopted a plural legal system, granting minorities some level of autonomy in managing their own family laws. Muslim legal disputes are traditionally settled by all-male councils whose interpretations of Sharia law have often treated women unfairly. Fed-up with this male-dominated setting that discriminates against them, the Indian Muslim Women's Movement (Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan - BMMA) has launched its own system of women-led courts, hence challenging what is still a highly patriarchal system.
